The course

A flat, fast city marathon that starts beside the Danube on Wagramer Straße, by the Vienna International Centre, and crosses the Reichsbrücke into the city. It heads through Praterstern and down the Prater Hauptallee, onto the Ring and out along the Wienzeile to Schönbrunn Palace, then back in along Mariahilfer Straße. After the half-marathon runners peel off, the second half runs north of the centre and along the Danube Canal, then back into the Prater for the long, tree-lined Hauptallee out and back past the Ernst-Happel-Stadion to the Lusthaus. The last few kilometres return to the Ring, finishing between the Burgtheater and the Rathaus. There are no real hills; the gentle drag out to Schönbrunn and the long straight Hauptallee are the parts to plan for. Route map and elevation profile below.
